Here are a few helpful hints when beginning an investigation.
1.) Research and development of the case.
You want to be fully prepared when walking into an
investigation. Make sure that you have followed up
on all information and details given by the client as
well as other witnesses.
2.) Make sure that you have all your equipment in good working order.
To show up at a client's home, or place of business, is very
unprofessional. Before leaving for a case make sure that you
have double checked all equipment. That you have any and all
electrical supplies you may need. Batteries, adapters, cords,
etc. .
3.) Respect the client and their home/ place of business.
Yes, they may have called you in to do an investigation,
but still you are a guest and at all times must conduct
yourself as so. Be aware of children, breakables, etc. .
4.)Take a tour of the home/place of business.
In order to conduct the investigation, you need to know
where the areas of activity are located. Where you need to
place cameras and audio equipment.
5.) Set up a base
On an investigation, you need to have an area that
functions as a base during the investigation. This area
will remain well litand be used for monitoring. Also, if
something happens and an investigator cannot continue,
there needs to be a place for them to go and collect
themselves.
6.) Do Not investigate alone.
When entering an investigation, you may not be sure
what type of haunting you are dealing with.Always
be sure to investigate with a partner. This is for
your safety and theirs.
7.) Be professional
It is imperative that all investigators act in a
professional manner. The clients have called you
in to help with a situation they don't understand,
or something they fear. If an investigator gets freaked
out and runs out of a place, it shows poorly on the group
as a whole. If something happens, calmly leave the room and
have your partner go with you.
8.) EMF Sweeps
Always be sure to have an EMF detector on hand. Remember
to get a base reading for the room and watch for spikes from
that base. When getting constant large spikes look for causes
i.e. open electrical panels, exposed wiring, etc.
9.) EVP Sweeps
A lot of hauntings have to do with audio. Voices singing,
speaking, whispering. You need to have a recorder on you when
doing an EVP Sweep of an area. Remember to ask questions related
to the accounts you have been given i.e. what's your name?!, Did
you die here!?, are you attached to someone in this place?!
10.) Communication w/ the spirit/ entity.
You can ask for signs of an entity's presence. Maybe move a
book, or make a noise. Something to let you know that they
are there. Be open to these experiences.
These are just the first in a list that I have been working on. I will post more very soon
